Water Softeners
Much of Minnesota has hard groundwater, which by definition is rich in dissolved calcium and magnesium. These ions do not pose a health risk. Even so, their high concentrations in water lead to several inconveniences around the home, such as:
- Odd-smelling water
- Metallic-tasting water
- Tough soap scum residue
- Stained porcelain bathroom fixtures
- Clogged faucets and showerheads
- Dry, dull and brittle hair
- Clogged pipes
- Dingy clothing
- Skin irritation
A water softener unit’s sole purpose is removing calcium and magnesium ions from water before it accesses the rest of the home’s plumbing. It does so by exposing hard water to special resin beads, which draw out and trap ions as they pass across their surfaces.
The best water softener for your home or commercial property depends on several factors, including your water’s hardness level and monthly water usage. If you believe you have hard water, suspect that your existing water softener is no longer performing sufficiently, or simply need softener salt delivery, then we welcome you to contact Ben Holzer Unlimited Water today!
Reverse Osmosis Systems
Osmosis: a process by which molecules of a solvent tend to pass through a semipermeable membrane from a less concentrated solution into a more concentrated one, thus equalizing the concentrations on each side of the membrane.
Reverse osmosis is exactly the opposite process. In simpler terms, a reverse osmosis system uses energy to push drinking water through a semipermeable membrane, thus removing contaminants from it.
A reverse osmosis filter has a very small pore size (approximately three ten-millionths of one inch). Because of this, it is capable of trapping and removing several types of contaminants from water, including:
- Protozoa, such as duodenalis which causes dysentery, and Plasmodium which causes malaria
- Bacteria, such as coli, Salmonella, and Campylobacter which causes diarrheal illness
- Viruses, such as Hepatitis A, Rotavirus which can hospitalize and kill children, and Norovirus which kills up to 800 Americans each year
- Chemicals, such as lead, fluoride and radium
Would you like a blanket approach to water purification at your home or place of business? Contact Ben Holzer Unlimited Water for installation of the Aqua Flo 475 Series Reverse
Osmosis System: a four-stage filtration system featuring disposable cartridges which further reduce risk of contamination.
Reverse osmosis also removes arsenic. But when water is highly contaminated by that particular heavy metal, adding a specialized filtration system dedicated solely to its removal is advisable.
Arsenic Removal Systems
You may not know much about chemistry, but you’ve probably heard by now that arsenic is bad news: highly toxic, and deadly or damaging to cells for a number of reasons. Long-term exposure to it can cause skin lesions and cancer, as well as contribute to diabetes and heart disease. Arsenic poisoning may also stunt cognitive development in children.
About 140 million people worldwide currently have arsenic poisoning as a result of drinking contaminated groundwater. Many of them include Americans, as the U.S. Geological Survey estimates that 2.1 million of us draw arsenic-laced water from private wells.
It is estimated that about 10% of private wells in Minnesota have arsenic levels higher than 10 µg/L, and therefore fail to meet the current drinking water standard set by the Environmental Protection Agency. Arsenic has been detected in about 40% of wells drilled in Minnesota since 2008. In Otter Tail County, MN, arsenic is detected in 41-60% of new wells. In neighboring Becker County, arsenic is detected in more than 60% of new wells!
If you live in either Otter Tail or Becker County, then we encourage you to contact Ben Holzer Unlimited Water today for a free arsenic screening. If we detect unsafe levels of arsenic, we can make your water safe to drink by installing the AdVantEdge DWS-2S-2710-02: an under-counter dual-stage water treatment system which removes up to 50 ppb of influent arsenic from 1,000 gallons of water before filter cartridge replacement becomes necessary.
